    Remarks:
The Soldiers' Monument was originally sited on a fifteen foot tall granite shaft at the intersection of Croton and North Highland. Erected in 1887, it replaced an earlier town war memorial of a kneeling angel (see IAS record NY001819) in Merchants Square. When some town members objected to the angel and suggested that a soldier be more appropriate for the town's war memorial, a soldier statue was reportedly borrowed from Sleepy Hollow Cemetery and the new Soldiers Monument erected. It stood at Croton and North Highland until 1930, when it was moved to its current site because of changing traffic patterns. In 1939, the "borrowed" soldier was returned, and a new soldier statue purchased for $2,750.
The monument's granite base was cleaned by sandblasting in 1969 as part of a Village beautification project. The statue was restored in May 1988 by Stuart Dean Inc., New York City. IAS files contain material from the Ossining Public Library and the Ossining Historical Society, including the names listed on the plaques.
