Robinson / Ames Bronze Foundry Chicopee, Mass (On front of base:) The constitution regulates our stewardship/The constitution devotes the domain to/Union, to justice, to defense, to wel-/fare and to liberty./But there is a higher law than the consti/tution, which regulates our authority over the/domain, and devotes it to the same noble purposes. (On right side of base:) Presented November 15, 1888, to the City/of Auburn, by the townsmen and friends/of William H. Seward, in commemoration/of his beneficient life, and of his dis-/tinguished services to the State, to/the Nation, and to Mankind. (On left side of base:) How through these years in silence thou hast born/The cruel doubt, the slanders of debate/The assassin's knife, and keener blade of scorn/Wielded by party in its narrow hate:/How could'st thou pause each step to vindicate/Of thy surpassing work? Lo! it is done./Freedom enshrined in our regenerative state./And they who were divided made as one! (On rear of base:) William H. Seward/1801-1872 signed Founder's mark appears.

    Remarks: 
    William Henry Seward (1801-1872) was a lawyer who served as Governor of New York, as a United States Senator, and as Secretary of State. As Secretary of State he negotiated the purchase of Alaska from Russia.
