It grew out of a series of pen and ink drawings done on May 11, 1958. The sculpture was originally executed in 1958 in oil on wood. Carl Nesjar introduced Picasso to a process of concrete casting called betongravre (concrete engraving). Nesjar adapted betongravre for his enlargements of Picasso's monumental planar sculpture.
