Description:
A series of seven reliefs are embedded in a brick paved area along the Lechmere Canal near the Charles River. There are six small square reliefs which are installed around a gazebo and one large hexagonal relief which is installed on the floor of the gazebo. The reliefs depict images found in beach sand such as shells, foot prints, hand prints, stones, fossils, and pools of shallow water; images found in the universe such as atomic particles and symbols of astronomy; and hieroglyphics.

Remarks:
To create the reliefs, the artist used actual castings of beach materials. The reliefs refer to the history of Boston's Charles River Basin which was once a back bay tidal flat opening to the sea. The reliefs were commissioned by the City of Cambridge through the Cambridge Arts Council's Percent for Art Program.
