Description:
Granite pylon carved with high-relief figure groups on three sides. On the front is a full-length figure of a man. He wears an undershirt and cuffed trousers. He holds his proper right arm bent at the elbow against his chest. In front of him stands a young boy. The man's proper left hand rests on the boy's shoulder. The boy wears a t-shirt and shorts. His proper right arm is raised in a fist. On the proper right side of the pylon is a full-length male figure. His head is turned to the front of the pylon, in proper right profile. He wears a shirt and trousers and an apron around his waist. He holds up a C-clamp in his proper right hand. His proper left hand is clenched in a fist. On the proper left side of the pylon is a full-length male figure. His head is turned toward the front, in proper left profile. He wears a shirt and tie and lab coat. In his proper left hand he cradles a lab beaker with a long spout. Sitting in front of his proper right leg at elbow height is a small figure of a man atop a lightning bolt. The man's knees are raised and his chin rests on his proper right arm. Standing in front of the scientist, at knee height is another full length male figure, shown in proper right profile. He wears a suit and is looking into a microscope. The sculpture is mounted on a granite base.

Remarks:
The sculpture was commissioned by the San Francisco Stock Exchange and by the architects of the new Exchange building. The sculpture is one of two flanking the entrance to the Stock Exchange building (see CA001714). SOS! survey reports material is California grey granite; related Stock Exchange publication states material is black granite. IAS files contain copy of related publication "San Francisco Stock Exchange", San Francisco: Committee on Public Relations, the Exchange, 1930.
