Inscription:  (Front of scroll:) PROCLAMATION OF EMANCIPATION (Proper left side of footing:) Manufactured by/W. H. Mullins/(bullet symbol) Salem Ohio/A (bullet symbol) Pelzer (bullet symbol) Sculptor (Front of base:) "WITH MALACE (sic) TOWARDS NONE,/WITH CHARITY FOR ALL/WITH FIRMNESS IN THE RIGHT/AS GOD GIVES US TO SEE THE RIGHT" (Back, lower left of base:) 1898 signed Founder's mark appears. Description:  Abraham Lincoln standing with proper left leg forward. He holds a copy of the Proclamation of Emancipation in his proper left hand. He stands atop a pyramid-shaped base of rough stone. Drake, a 19th century real-estate developer, made an agreement with the Mullins Company of Salem, Ohio to create a statue of Abraham Lincoln for $700. IAS files contain letter of agreement, dated June 4, 1898, from W. H. Mullins (W.E. Lambert) to the New Jersey Mutual Realty Company, to furnish the statue. On the day the statue was dedicated, the southern part of Middlesex Borough was officially named Lincoln. (Middlesex was not taken as name by vote until May 6, 1913). The Middlesec Borough Library (on Mountain Avenue, in Middlesex) maintains a file for the "Lincoln Statue," which includes photocopies of the Mullins June 4, 1898 correspondence cited.
