Description:
Two bronze, larger than life size depictions of the tortoise and the hare characters from Aesop's Fables. The hare is depicted stopping to scratch his ear while the tortoise makes his way to the finish line. The sculptures are installed near the finish line for the Boston Marathon.

The inscription on a nearby plaque reads: Tortoise and Hare/at Copley Square (copyright symbol)/was created by Nancy Schon as a permanent tribute/to the runners from all over the world/who have participated in the Boston Marathon/Friends of Copley Square/May 1995.
IAS files contain an article from Copley Square News (Spring 1994); and a copy of the proposal submitted by the Friends of Copley Square to the Edward Ingersoll Browne Trust Fund requesting $50,000 (Houghton Mifflin Company was noted as funding $20,000 of the cost and the Friends of Copley Square was to provide the remaining $15,000). The
sculpture
is designed to touched and played on by children.
