    Remarks:
Commissioned by the City and erected under the auspices of the Bethlehem Lodge of Free Masons and later the Augusta Soldiers' Monument Association. The cost was $10,000. The principal donors were Judge Richard D. Rice and Mrs. Abigail Farwell, who owned the land on which the work is sited. In 1879, the land was given to the City with the stipulation that a Civil War monument be erected. The City voted to appropriate funds on June 14, 1880. The site was originally known as Augusta Mall, a mustering point for Kennebec Valley troops and it was later known as Monument Park. The monument was treated by St. Hilaire Restoration of Lewiston, Maine. IAS files contain related articles from the Kennebec Journal, Sept. 22, 1882 and 1947, and excerpts from the books "Historical Notes on Augusta, Maine," by Joseph T. Beck (Knowlton McLeary Printers, 1962) and "Civil War Union Monuments," by Mildred C. Baruch and Ellen J. Beckman, 1978.
