Born on April 13, 1787 in Winchester, Ohio and died on April 24, 1861 in Wooster, Ohio. On April 1, 1813, he married Hannah Vanemmon, the adopted daughter of Constant Lake. They moved to Wooster, Ohio with "Priest" Jones, the first postmaster of Wooster. He built the first jail in Wooster in 1819. He served in the Ohio Senate from 1892-1832. The painting is apparently painted over another picture, as there is evidence visible at certain angles.

Benjamin Jones (1787-1861). Handwritten note on a piece of paper stuck to paper backing of portrait reads: “This is an oil painting of Hon. Benjamin Jones. Father of Dr. Benjamin Jackson Jones. He was born in Winchester, Virginia April 13, 1776 the year of the adoption of the Constitution of the United States. His father Samuel Jones was a Captain in the Fifteenth Virginia Regiment and the family emigrated to Washington PA when Benny was a boy - Seven years old - he married Hannah Van Niman April 1st 1812. He and wife lived their lives in Wooster, Ohio where he filled many offices in the County and was a Congressman from that District two terms taking in the last four years of President Andrew Jackson with whom he was upon the most intimate terms - He died April 24th 1861 and was said the day First Company of Wayne County boys left for Columbus, Ohio for the Civil War."
