Remarks:
Born on Sept. 4, 1819 in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania and died on Oct. 1, 1866. On Nov. 23, 1843, he married Susan Croco of Holmes County, Ohio. He was a self-educated lawyer and became a prosecuting attorney in Holmes County for two terms starting in 1843. He served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1849-1850. He established a law practice in Wooster, Ohio with John P. Jeffries in 1850, and was partner with John McSweeney from 1855-1859. He was a judge of the Common Pleas Court from 1859-1862. He was a colonel in the 102nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry from 1862-1865. The GAR post in Wooster, Ohio is named in his honor.
Hon. Col. William Given (1819-1866), was born in 1819 in Pennsylvania. In 1838 he moved with his family to Holmes County, Ohio. He was admitted to the bar in 1843, and that same year was elected prosecuting attorney of Holmes County. In1840 he was elected to the General Assembly of Ohio. In 1850 he moved to Wooster, and in1858 was elected judge of the common pleas court. He remained on the bench until 1862 then resigned to lead the 102nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, serving for the entirety of the war and died only a year after returning to Wooster,at the age of 47 in 1866.
