Matthias Rittenhouse (1805-1878) was born in 1805 in Worcester Township. Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, tthe son of Rev. Matthias V. Rittenhouse a Mennonite minister of Pennsylvania and wealthy farmer who died in 1832. Matthias came to Ohio in the 1830s with four of his brothers when it became apparent there would be no land left for them from their father's 88 acre estate. Matthias settled in Plain Township, part of section 21, consisting of eighty acres. The farm was unimproved when he bought it, but was cleared by him and transformed into a comfortable home. He married Catharine Gotwals and they had eight children. Matthias lived on the farm in Plain Township until his death in 1878.
