(Incised on pedestal, top front:) DEDICATED TO/MCKELVY POST NO. 134 G.A.R./OF ST. CLOUD, MINN./MEMORIAL DAY, MAY 30, 1918 (Incised on pedestal, bottom front:) "WITH MALICE TOWARD NONE/WITH CHARITY FOR ALL/WITH FIRMNESS IN THE RIGHT/AS GOD GIVES US TO SEE THE RIGHT" (Donors are listed on the reverse of the pedestal)
Description:
Full-length figure of Abraham Lincoln stands on a tall pedestal, flanked by urns, on a low base. Lincoln wears a suit with bow tie, vest and long coat. His proper right hand is extended palm up and he holds an unfurled scroll, the Emancipation Proclamation, in his proper left hand. There is an unfurled American flag incised on the front of the pedestal, between inscriptions.

Remarks:
The sculpture was placed on Victory Memorial Drive in honor of the city's Civil War Veterans. The sculpture is one of eight known pieces by the W. H.
Mullins
Company
based on the 1898 design of Alfonso Pelzer. Donors to the sculpture include the Elks Club and the Gustavus Adolphus Sick Benefit Society. IAS files contain an excerpt from "Monumental Minnesota," by Moira F. Harris ([St. Paul]: Pogo Press, 1992, pg. 27-28).
