    Remarks:
Daniel Chester French was commissioned to create this sculpture group for the base of a quadrangular dome on the St. Louis Custom House and Post Office (now called the Old Post Office). The building architect was Alfred B. Mullett. The composition for this sculpture group was drawn from the Medici Chapel in Florence, Italy. French completed the models ca. 1877/1878. The stone was carved by William Struthers & Sons, in Philadelphia. The original sculpture group was restored and moved inside the Old Post Office; a replacement is now on the building facade.
Save Outdoor Sculpture survey report lists execution date of sculpture as 1877, while McCue's "Sculpture City: St. Louis" reports that the models were finished in 1878. The United States General Services Administration reported the execution date as 1882.
