Description:
A large "V" made of grey granite on a horizontal rectangular base of polished black granite, flanked by two upright rectangular panels of polished black granite. The "V" has a wedge-shaped crack in the right side that is made of a darker stone. The left panel is a dedication tablet. The right panel contains an etched image of three soldiers.
The three Vietnam War soldiers walk side-by-side, dressed in combat gear. The soldier in the middle wears an unbuttoned vest and holds his rifle down in his proper left hand. The soldier to his proper left carries his rifle in front of him with both hands. A towel is draped around his neck. A knife and water bottle hang from the proper left side of his belt. The soldier to the proper right wears a wide-brimmed hat and a vest with ammunition rounds strapped across it. He totes a machine gun on his proper right shoulder with his proper right hand. The entire memorial is mounted on a short, tapered base that has a band of rough-hewn stone around the bottom and four military emblems across the front.

Remarks:
Funded by private contributions, the sculpture cost $10,000. It honors the memory of six Hartwell area men who were killed in the Vietnam War-- Durward Cordell, Louis Clever, Bobby James, Thadeus Durrett, Galen Smith and Sammy Whitworth. The project was spearheaded by the Hartwell Vietnam Veterans Memorial Association. The image of the three soldiers is copied from Frederick Hart's "National Vietnam Memorial," in Washington, D.C. IAS files contain related articles from the Hartwell Sun: July 30, 1987; Aug. 27, 1987; and Nov. 12, 1987.
