Inscription:
(Plaque on the south side of the sculpture:) The men who drafted the Massachusetts Constitution, John Adams, Samuel Adams & James Bowdoin, are represented here by the 3 granite forms which direct the flow of movement toward the middle of the sculpture. The rough & undulating surface texture of these primary stones indicate the Constitution. The interplay of form & space around this grouping suggests the interchange of ideas that must have taken place between the three. The middle stone representative of John Adams, arches forward bridging the gap to the pieces representative of the dynamic structure of the Constitution. As the creation of a government is a building process of thoughts & ideas, the pieces facing the 3 primary stones curve & interact upon each other suggesting the unifying strength of the Constitution.
Description:
Abstract work of massive granite shapes representing John Adams, Samuel Adams, and James Bowdoin. The interplay of shapes and spaces echoes the interchange of ideas between the three men as they drafted the Massachusetts Constitution.
