Remarks:
The sculpture was inspired by the painting "The Battle of Oriskany" by Frederick Yohn. As part of July 2002 conservation treatment, a missing sword was replicated based on historical photos. In 2002, a time capsule with newspaper clippings about the restoration and other town information was placed in a concrete box inside the base of the sculpture.
IAS files contain related newspaper clippings, including article from The Evening Times (Herkimer County, NY), March 11, 2002 and article written by William H. Watkins "In Search of Nicholas Herkimer."
Conservation:
Treated 2002 July. Coryat Casting Co., Inc. (Rhinebeck, NY). Treatment report on file with owner and conservator.
