Inscription:  Broughmiller '84 (Middle of longest length of foundation:) Yielding Spire/by/John Brough Miller/August 20, 1984/Donated by Wilma and Bud Messing signed Subject:  Abstract -- Geometric Object Type:  Outdoor Sculpture -- Missouri -- Columbia Sculpture Owner:  Administered by University of Missouri, Campus Facilities, General Services Building, 900 East Stadium, Columbia, Missouri 65211 Located University of Missouri, Lowry Mall just south of Lowry Hall, Columbia, Missouri Remarks:  The sculpture was commissioned as part of the $842,000 Lowry Mall renovation project and was the first art piece installed on the mall. The project was funded by the Missouri Arts Council, the Student Capital Improvement Fund, and UMC development funds. The work was a gift to the University of Missouri from Wilma and Bud Messing. "Yielding Spire" reflects the traditional aspects of academia, while the disk and sphere represent more contemporary elements. These last two elements impinge on the spire, but don't destroy it, so that the spire yields. IAS files contain an article from the Mizzou Weekly dated November 2, 1984 and two articles from the Columbia Missourian dated August 24, 1984 and October 24, 1984.
