    Remarks:
This sculpture was erected to commemorate the original "Tree of Hope" a tree around which out-of-work Black actors and actresses used to congregate to exchange information about jobs. When someone got work, he/she would kiss the tree in gratitude. Inscription on plaque embedded in the pavement about three feet from the sculpture reads: THE ORIGINAL/TREE OF HOPE/BELOVED BY THE PEOPLE OF HARLEM/YOU ASKED FOR A TREE OF HOPE/HERE (...transcription illegible)/Bill Robinson. The sculpture was originally located at the curb, but was moved back several feet after it was hit by a car.
