South portico sculpture depicting the Union Shield, flanked by two seated female figures and topped by an eagle with wings outspread. The women have joined hands in front of the shield signifying the rejoining of the Union
after
the Civil War.

Remarks:
The sculpture is a replica of the original sculpture created by
Pietro
Mezzara
in 1873. The original sculpture was removed in 1948 during construction of the annex and was either destroyed or lost. The replacement sculpture was fabricated by Spero Anargyros and cast by Western Art Stone in 1981. Raymond Girvigian served as a restoration consultant. The sculpture is one of four pieces recreated by the artist, as part the Capital restoration project. IAS files contain related articles from the Sacramento Bee, Sept. 14, 1982, pg.
