IAS files contain a copy of the Meriden Record Journal (Meriden, CT), Aug. 19, 1983. Total cost of the monument was $11,000; funds were raised by members of the Merriam Post of the G.A.R., who themselves contributed $1,000. An iron fence originally surrounded the monument; in front of it were four cannon captured from the Confederates. During World War II, these cannon were donated to the scrap drive. 20,000 attended the statue's dedication.
