Description:
A young female, thought to be a tobacco farmer's daughter, in a reclining position, reads a letter to her younger brother, seated at her feet. She is wearing a simple dress and is barefoot. He wears long pants and a shirt with collar and rolled-up sleeves. In the background, between the girl and boy is a tobacco plant. Another tobacco plant is behind her on the right side of the relief. The tobacco plants are symbolic of Kentucky's tobacco industry.

Remarks:
One of two murals (see also IAS record 66400073, Horsebreeding) on the building done by the artist through the Works Progress Administration (WPA), Section of Fine Arts of the Public Buildings Administration of the Federal Works Agency. The new post office cost $450,000. Schmitz was paid $6,000 for the reliefs. Ellett was the consulting architect and Simon was the supervising architect. Schmitz designed and modelled the relief murals, and contracted with Hirlund for the carving. IAS files contain related 1940 correspondence with the artist regarding subcontracting of work.
IAS files also contain related excerpts from Tristate Magazine, Dec. 14, 1986, pg. 12-17; and Kentucky Post, Nov. 22, 1940 and March 25, 1994. The image that appears in the Nov. 22, 1940 edition of the Kentucky Post is reversed.
