    Remarks:
John Russell Lowell was the Smith Professor of Modern Languages. McKim, Mead & White designed the base. The sculpture was given by the class of 1883 and was installed in front of Massachusetts Hall. Pink Tennessee marble was chosen for the base because it was thought to be more in keeping with the brick facade of Massachusetts Hall. The sculpture was relocated to Lowell House Courtyard in the fall of 1930.
