Remarks:
The memorial commemorates the life of Boston resident Francis Parkman (1823-1893) who was a famous Native-American scholar and explorer. In 1895, a group of Boston citizens headed by Lorin F. Deland formed the Parkman Memorial Committee and asked
architect
Charles
Follen
McKim
to create the memorial. He approached sculptor Daniel Chester French and in 1897,
McKim
, French, and sculptor Augustus St. Gaudens met to determine the initial memorial. The three collaborated on the project until 1902 when
architect
Henry Bacon took over the project from
McKim
. Bacon and French submitted three different designs before one was accepted by the Parkman Memorial Committee. The final design and clay relief were not completed until 1906 due to difficulties with the design of the portrait relief plaque. In July 1906, the granite was carved by F. C. Recchia and in October 1906, the memorial was installed. The inscription written by
Charles
Sargent, a Harvard professor and long-time friend of Parkman, was not carved until May of 1907. The memorial was never formally dedicated.
In 1990, Skylight Studio recast the relief plaque. IAS files contain an excerpt from Michael Richmond's "Daniel Chester French," Washington, DC: National Trust for Historic Preservation, 1976, pg. 97-102 which includes illustrations of the unaccepted designs for the memorial.
