    Description: 
    A Civil War soldier strides forward carrying his rifle over his proper right shoulder. With his proper left hand he holds the handle of his saber which is strapped to his proper left hip. He carries a backpack and wears a cap and a hip-length jacket. The sculpture is mounted on a base with relief decorations under the cornice on each side. They are: a laurel wreath and two crossed swords; a cannon, ramrod and leaves; oak leaves and a bugle; and a rifle, canteen and pouch. Each corner of the base is decorated with an upright cannon barrel. The bottom of the base is stepped.

    Remarks: 
    The sculpture was installed by the Soldiers Monument Commission of Le Roy with $2,000 in donated funds and a $2,000 appropriation from the town. The sculpture honors the men of Le Roy who served during the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Civil War. The base was fabricated by McDonnell and Sons of Buffalo under the direction of Raymond J. Smith. It was dedicated during Memorial Day festivities on May 30, 1906. IAS files contain a complete transcription of names listed on base; an article from the Le Roy Gazette, May 30, 1906; a copy of the Soldiers Monument Commission meeting minutes from late 1904 through early 1905; and a list of subscribers for the sculpture.
