    Description: 
    Portrait of Morton McMichael seated in a chair with both arms resting on the arms of the chair and his proper left foot forward. He is dressed in a jacket, buttoned vest, and tie. His hair is parted in the middle and he sports a moustache. His proper right hand is raised in a gesture as if speaking. The sculpture rests on a square base which is installed on a raised platform. Eleven steps, plus two additional steps lead to the platform.

    Remarks: 
    Morton McMichael was the county sheriff from 1843-1845 and mayor of Philadelphia from 1866-1869. During his career, he worked as a journalist for the Saturday Evening Post and studied law. In 1867 when the Fairmount Park Commission was formed, he was elected its president and served in that capacity until his death in 1879. Funds for this piece were provided through public subscription.
