    Standing figure of Pierre Menard wearing a long coat buttoned up the front. He has a cloth draped over his proper left arm as he look down on an Indian seated at his feet. The seated figure has an animal skin draped over his proper right knee, and is holding tools in his hands.

    Remarks: 
    IAS files contain copies of The State Journal (Springfield, IL), Jan. 10th, 1888 pg. 4; and The State Journal (Springfield, IL) Jan. 11, 1888, pg. 2, discussing the statue's unveiling and dedication. This was the first statue on the Capitol grounds. Erected at a cost of 10,000 dollars, funding provided by Charles Pierre Chouteau of St. Louis. Chouteau was the son of Menard's former business partner. Pierre Menard was the first Lieutenant Governor of the State of Illinois. Originally placed facing 2nd Street on the northeast portion of the Capitol Grounds on May 28, 1886. Was kept boxed until Dec. 1887, when unveiled. Statue was moved in 1918 to present location to make room for the Stephen A. Douglas statue.
