Provenance:
Formerly located Market Square, In front of City Hall, North Water & East Wells Streets, Milwaukee, Wisconsin 1891-1941.
Remarks:
Henry Bergh was founder of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to animals (1866). The Wisconsin Society was founded in 1879 and helped raise $14,000 to erect this statue to Bergh, dedicated April 19th or 29th, 1891. The statue originally stood in front of City Hall in the center of a circular drinking fountain for horses and dogs. Fifty years later, the troughs were replaced by flower beds. In 1941, the statue was moved to Mason and Water Streets, to allow for widening of street. At that time, in honor of the 50th anniversary of its dedication, a circular plaque was added to the base. In 1967, Marshall & Ilsley Bank construction resulted in relocation to Wisconsin Humane Society grounds. The statue was rededicated at the new site August 16, 1967.
IAS files contain unmounted photocopy of sculpture in its original setting near City Hall and related newsclippings, including articles from Milwaukee Sentinel, Aug. 14, 1967; April 21, 1967, and August 16, 1967. IAS files also include citations to unpublished archival materials at Milwaukee City Historical Society.
