Remarks:
One of four portrait statues on south facade of Capitol building, honoring individuals important in Connecticut's history. The sculpture was commissioned under the supervision of the State Commission on Sculpture and installed around 1934. General Alfred Howe Terry (1827-1890) was a Civil War hero who was First Division commander and victor at the Battle of Fort Fisher (1865).
The sculpture was cleaned and restored as part of a complete restoration of the State Capitol, completed in 1985. For further reading see: Marion Hepburn Grant's "In and About Hartford-Tours and Tales," (Hartford: Connecticut Historical Society, 1978), pg. 193.
