    Description: 
    Atop a granite base stands a bronze female figure representing Liberty holding a shield in her proper left hand and raising a wreath with her proper right hand. The granite base below her is adorned with four bronze relief plaques depicting scenes from the Civil War. In one relief, a soldier heading off to war embraces his wife while their son plays with his father's scabbard. The next relief depicts a Civil War battlefield in the heat of battle. The third relief, depicts a surgeon tending to a wounded soldier while a guard stands nearby. And the fourth relief depicts a scene in the South of a widow and her son weeping by a grave while an African American stands by her side.

    Remarks: 
    The citizens of Holyoke voted $10,000 for a monument to honor the town's soldiers who died in the Civil War. The monument was erected in Hampden Park, later renamed Veterans Park. IAS files contain a newspaper article from the Holyoke Transcript-Telegraph dated 1978 and a copy of the Massachusetts Historical Commission Form C - Monuments questionnaire dated July 1975.
