Remarks:
In August 1975, the Fremont Improvement Committee (now the Fremont Arts Council) solicited artwork proposals from local artists for the site to commemorate the Fremont district's 100th anniversary. Richard Beyer was commissioned to create the sculpture, which cost approximately $10,000. Funds for construction costs and the artist's fee were raised by local groups. Through the Comprehensive Employment and Training Act (CETA), the Seattle Arts Commission provided a year's salary for Bruce Crowley to assist Beyer with the creation of the sculpture.
Peter
Larsen
, of the design firm Environmental Works, developed the plans for the pergola. IAS files contain related excerpts from James M. Rupp's "Art in Seattle's Public Places," Seattle: Univ. of Washington, 1992, pg. 201; and "A Field Guide to Seattle's Public Art," Seattle Arts Commission, 1991, pg. 134.
