    Description: 
    A bronze figure of a Civil War soldier returning from the war is mounted on a large stone boulder. The soldier carries his rifle over his proper right shoulder and hooks his proper left thumb on his belt. As he walks, he steps over a branch of Southern Pine. A canteen and a small kit bag are slung over his proper left hip.

    Remarks: 
    A monument association was formed on Jan. 18, 1896 consisting of representatives from the A. W. Bartlett Post, No. 49 of the Grand Army of the Republic, the Belleville Improvement Society, and the Woman's Relief Corps. Funds for the sculpture were raised through members of the monument association. IAS files contain an excerpt from John J. Currier's "The History of Newburyport Massachusetts 1764-1905, Somersworth, NH: New Hampshire Publishing Co., 1977, pg. 220-221. Additional information is available at the Newburyport Library, Hamilton Room archives.
