Description:
The monument consists of a central granite column that is topped by a heroic bronze female figure representing Utica. The column is adorned around the base with two bronze female figures representing Peace and Victory and two bronze male figures representing the Navy and the Army. Encircling the middle of the column is a bronze relief depicting scenes of volunteers leaving home to join the war, soldiers in battle, and soldiers returning home from the war.

The memorial was erected in honor of the soldiers and sailors from Utica who served in the Civil War. For additional information see the collection files at the Oneida County Historical Society in Utica, New York which contain contracts of the monument association and treasurer's records.
