Description:
Over the front entrance and around the sides of the Garfield Monument, there are five relief panels that illustrate events in the life of James A. Garfield. The first relief, starting on the left side of the building, shows Garfield as a teacher in a school room delivering a lecture. (This relief was based on a photograph loaned to the artist by Garfield's mother.) The next relief shows him as a statesman delivering an oration to a group of cheering listeners. The next relief shows him as a soldier delivering a message to General Thomas at the Battle of Chickamauga during the Civil War. The next relief shows him taking the oath of office as President of the United States. And the last relief depicts the bier of assassinated President Garfield attended by grieving citizens.

Remarks:
IAS image files contain a photograph of only the relief depicting Garfield as he delivers a speech to a group of cheering citizens. IAS files contain an excerpt from the 1890 dedication brochure for the Garfield Monument which includes a detailed description of the six exterior reliefs as well as illustrations of each relief. The Lakeview Granite & Monumental Works and the Carabelli Company were responsible for ornamental carvings on the Garfield Monument building, but perhaps not the reliefs by Caspar Buberl.
