Description:
The bust of Elizabeth Blackwell in relief, with shoulder-length hair, wearing a pointy-collared shirt and necktie. The bust emerges from the chimney of an abstract, relief fireplace. The fireplace is red brick with a beige mantle. The off-white chimney is in the center. The bricks on either side of the upper portion of the chimney have book titles on them.

. D./Dr. Blackwell was the first woman awarded a/medical degree in the United States. She began/her medical studies in Asheville in 1845 under/Dr. John Dickson, for whom she taught music at/Dickson's private school for girls. The school/was located on the site of the Drhumor Building./Elizabeth Blackwell was an 1849 graduate of/Geneva Medical College in western New York./Placed by Buncombe County Medical Auxiliary/and Buncombe County Medical Society. IAS files contain a pamphlet "Downtown Asheville: the Asheville Urban Trail," City of Asheville, Downtown Development Office, n.d. IAS files also contain a related article from the Asheville Citizen Times, July 12, 1994, pg. 2C.
