Description:
Full-length portrait of Roger Sherman. He is depicted striding forward, with proper right arm extended, fingers pointing outward; and a rolled document held at his side in his proper left hand. He stands atop a column, underneath a Gothic canopy on Capitol facade.

Remarks:
The sculpture was installed in 1878 and is one of four portrait statues on the east facade of the state capitol honoring individuals important in Connecticut's history. Roger Sherman (1721-1793) was first mayor of New Haven, a delegate to the first Continental Congress, and a signer of the Declaration of Independence.
