    Remarks:
Dr. Wells (1815-1848) was the Hartford dentist who is credited with discovering anesthesia. With himself as the first recipient, Wells successfully demonstrated the use of "laughing gas" (nitrous oxide) to anesthetize his mouth for the extraction of a tooth. The statue was unveiled on July 22, 1875, at a cost of $10,000. It was funded by the State of Connecticut and the City of Hartford. The face was modeled after a plaster cast taken after death and an old daguerreotype.
