The bust was listed as "A Bronze Portrait Bust" in the Christie's sale catalog 7253, Nov. 14, 1991. The bust was commissioned by John Watts de Peyster who was the grandson of John Watts on his mother's side. John Watts de Peyster would also commission from Bissell an 18 inch statuette of John Watts (IAS record number 08580157) in the collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and a 9 ft. 3 inch bronze statue of John Watts that resides in Trinity Churchyard (New York) where John Watts is buried.
