    Description: 
    Figure of a Union soldier standing at parade rest, set on top of a tall granite base. He wears a uniform consisting of a long coat, a cape buttoned at the top, and a cap. He holds the barrel of a rifle with both hands, the butt resting in front of his proper right foot. A canteen and knife are partially visible on his proper left side. The base is decorated with reliefs of garlands, an eagle, and a star.

    Remarks: 
    IAS files contain a copy of an unidentified article dated April 30, 1919 that estimates the cost of the statue at around $10,000. The statue was erected by Rice County in 1918. In front of the statue is an eternal flame atop a cylindrical cement base. It was dedicated in 1969. In front of the flame is a cement slab with two bronze plaques. One plaque reads: Rice County/Time Capsule/deposited by Lyons Centennial/Committee Jan. 29 - 1962/Byron Babcock - Chairman/Wm. Chandler, Jr. Paul Jones/Arthur Hodgson A.R. Pearce/Horace Jones Elmer Wesseler. Other plaque reads: Rice County Centennial/Time Capsule/August 25, 1971/To be opened August 25, 2071.
