Remarks:
One of four portrait statues on the south facade of the Capitol, honoring invididuals important in Connecticut history. Ella Grasso (1919-1981) was the first woman in the United States, elected in her own right as the governor of a state (1975-1980). The $65,000 statue of Governor Grasso was sponsored and paid for by the Ella T. Grasso Memorial State Committee. The artist did a bust and several models before the final design was accepted and the final sculpture was dedicated Feb. 5, 1987, on the sixth anniversary of Grasso's death.
