    Remarks:
Goethe (1749-1832) was a German poet, novelist and dramatist. His most famous work was the drama "Faust," which he worked on for over sixty years. Goethe also made contributions in the scientific and philosophical fields. In 1876 the Goethe Society acquired a cast of Fischer's bust (IAS 76003501) and placed it in the Metropolitan. In 1932 the Goethe Society marked the centennial of Goethe's death by moving the bust out in Bryant Park. After it was installed, they learned that the bust was an iron casting plated with copper. In 1934, they asked the Parks Department to recast it in bronze to replace the iron. The base was created by Victor Frisch. Additional information is available in the Bryant Park file of the Art & Architecture Department at the New York Public Library on 42nd Street, and at the Bryant Park Restoration Corporation located at 6 East 43rd Street.
