Henry Bonnard Bronze Co. for Frederick & Field, Quincy, MASS. 1890 (Bronze plaque on front of base:) TO THE SOLDIERS AND SAILORS/OF THE COUNTY OF/ULSTER/IN THE WAR FOR THE UNION/1861-1865. THEIR GRATEFUL FELLOW CITIZENS signed Founder's mark appears.
    Description: 
    An elaborate war memorial, crowned at top by a marble figure of a woman, standing with laurel wreath in proper left hand and a shield in her proper right hand. At the base of the memorial are two bronze figures of a soldier and sailor. The soldier, dressed in uniform, stands holding a gun with both hands. A bayonet hangs from his belt on the proper left side. He steps forward with his proper left leg. On the opposite side, a sailor holds what is left of a sabre with the blade broken off about 3 1/2 inches from the guard, to his chest in his proper right hand; his proper left foot rests on a cleat with rope around it.
    The tiered base is decorated with bronze relief plaques. On the front are two crossed cannons inside a wreath and a text plaque. On the back, there is a relief of a gun, butt down positioned vertically, and two crossed sabres in their cases, handles up. On the lower tier of the base on the rear is a medallion with a spread eagle, two female figures representing Liberty and Justice, a shield showing two ships and a ribbon with the word Excelsior.
