Fraughton signed Description:  A male infantryman seen standing, dressed in western style hat and moccasin shoes. He is carrying the Book of Mormon in his proper left hand; and holds a rifle over his proper right shoulder. He has a canteen slung across his chest, and wears a backpack with a bedroll. A Bible is stuffed in the pocket of the backpack. He strides forward with his proper left leg. Three nearby plaques read, from left to right: ERECTED IN HONOR OF/THE 500 VOLUNTEER SOLDIERS OF THE MORMON BATTALION/1846-48/IN THE MIDST OF THEIR PREPARATION FOR THEIR EXODUS TO THE VALLEY OF/THE GREAT SALT LAKE, THE MORMON PIONEERS WERE ASKED BY THE/UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT TO ENLIST A BATTALION OF 500 VOLUNTEERS/FOR SERVICE IN THE WAR WITH MEXICO. THOSE TROOPS STARTED FROM WESTERN/IOWA IN JULY 1846, AND ARRIVED IN SAN DIEGO JANUARY 29, 1849, COMPLETING/THE LONGEST INFANTRY MARCH IN HISTORY. THIS EXPEDITION HELPED WIN THE/WAR, PREPARED THE WAY FOR COLONIZATION OF THE SOUTHWEST, OPENED NEW/TRADE ROUTES AND STRENGTHENED INTERSTATE BOUNDARIES./ERECTED AS A GIFT TO THE CITY OF SAN DIEGO/DURING ITS 220 YEAR ANNIVERSARY/BY THE NATIONAL SOCIETY OF THE SONS OF UTAH PIONEERS/NOVEMBER 22, 1969.
