    Remarks:
The sculpture was commissioned by Jack and Jean Luskin and Melvin and Jeanne Berger. It was added to an existing Holocaust Memorial by Arthur D. Valk which had been criticized as being uninspiring and not sufficiently representative of the Holocaust. The Sheppard piece was also controversial, criticized for its explicit and graphic details; for aesthetic reasons, for being commissioned outside normal channels; and because it was an add on to the existing Valk work. The Shepphard piece has been cleaned and varnished by Cameo Bronze. IAS files contain a related article from the Jewish Times, Sept. 16, 1988. For further reading, see the Jewish Times, May 22, 1992.
