Remarks:
The sculpture was commissioned by Jack and Jean Luskin and Melvin and Jeanne Berger. It was added to an existing Holocaust Memorial by Arthur
D
. Valk which had been criticized as being uninspiring and not sufficiently representative of the Holocaust. The Sheppard piece was also controversial, criticized for its explicit and graphic details; for aesthetic reasons, for being commissioned outside normal channels; and because it was an add on to the existing Valk work.
