    Description: 
    A World War I foot soldier stands, proper right leg forward and bent at the knee, suggesting the "spirit and determination of the universal soldier." His proper right hand grasps a rifle's barrel end, the other end rests by the toe of the proper left foot. A shell belt circles his waist, and has a bayonet attached to it. His proper left hand rests against the hip, and a bag hangs from a strap over his shoulder and across his chest. He wears a shirt open at the neck and a WWI-style helmet.

    Remarks: 
    Sculpture faces the west. It was turned 3 inches towards the south from its original placement on the base. IAS files contain related article from Williston Daily (Williston, ND), May 21, 1931 which discusses events surrounding the installation of the sculpture in 1918. Article states that this is "the first monument ever erected in America to the Memory of the Unknown Soldier."
