    Description: 
    Portrait of a woman in a voluminous narrow-waisted black dress, fine lace shawl, gold necklace and earrings, tortoiseshell comb; in 3/4 pose facing proper left. Her foreshortened left arm rests on the arm of a red Empire daybed or window seat, and her left hand holds a bead-decorated reticule. Plain dark-green background.

    Remarks: 
    Sarah Dempster Phillips was born February 22, 1802 in Florida, Montgomery County, New York, the daughter of William Phillips and Hannah (Houseman) Phillips. She was baptized by itinerant minister Rev. James Dempster on March 22, 1802. She was married to dry-goods merchant Alexander Gifford Cochran (1802-1875) on January 26, 1826 in New York City, in a ceremony officiated by her brother the Rev. William Wirt Phillips, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, New York City. Alexander G. Cochran appears in the New York City business directories of 1829 and 1835, and the New Orleans census of 1840. According to her obituary, she was a resident of New Orleans before returning to Amsterdam, Montgomery County, New York about 1839. She died on June 19, 1892. She and her husband are buried in Green Hill Cemetery, Amsterdam, New York. Her son William F. Cochran of Yonkers, New York and son-in-law Stephen Sanford of Amsterdam, New York became the heads of two textile manufacturing dynasties. Her descendants were among the wealthiest U.S. citizens of the early 20th Century, and were prominent in social, philanthropic and sporting activities.
