Remarks:
The Dickson City Land Waves project was sponsored by the Rural Abandoned Mine Program. It was originally intended to involve the reclamation and beautification of three sites within the Storrs Pit, a vast tract of strip mine area in Dickson City, Pennsylvania. The "Valley of 8000 Pines" was completed in May 1983 and the "Black Walnut Forrest" was completed in May 1984, but a serpentine vineyard planned for 1985, on the only private land at the site, was never realized.
Funding for the project was provided by the Department of Environmental Resources of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the Scranton Area Foundation, Lackawanna County Commission on Cultural Affairs, and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. IAS files contain articles from Sculpture (Nov.-Dec. 1994): pg. 32-33 and Issue, A Journal for Artists (Winter 1986): pg. 37-40. IAS image files contain photos taken while the seedlings were being planted in 1984, but no subsequent photos.
