A bronze sculpture of a medic, facing west, kneeling over a wounded soldier. The soldier lies on his back with his knees bent. His shirt is off and his chest is bandaged. The medic kneels over the soldier and administers an IV to the soldier's proper right forearm. The IV unit is hung from the butt of a rifle. The bayonet end of the rifle is stuck in the ground near the soldier's proper right foot. The uniform and equipment depicted are from World War II (ca. 1944, European Theater). The medic wears a full uniform including a helmet, backpack, canteen, fatigues, and boots. The piece rests on an oval-shaped pink granite base.

LTC Richard J. Berchin, MSC, conceived and developed the idea for this monument from 1974 to 1977. A 1943 painting by Jes Schlaikjier (see IAS files for postcard reproduction) was the inspiration for the statue. A Combat Medic Memorial Fund was established, with funds raised primarily through direct mail solicitations to individuals and organizations world-wide. Based on guidance from Berchin, the original sketch and memorial concept were prepared by Fred Oberlies and were copyrighted in Nov. 1977. Katherine Rhymes Speed Ettl refined the original sketch and produced the initial scale model, which is on permanent display in the United States Army Medical Department Museum. The full-scale bronze sculpture was produced by a combination of sand-casting and lost wax casting at Bedi-Makky Art Foundry. The firm of Noonan & Krocker & Dockery prepared the architectural design; general contracting work was done by the Roy McGinnis Company; and the Morton Southwest Company coordinated the construction support provided by numerous local businesses.
