The father of this Pioneer family stands between the mother and a son. The mother cradles a baby, wrapped in a blanket, in her arms, their heads close together. The father looks forward, and holds his son's proper right hand; his proper right arm is around the shoulders of the mother. The boy's proper left hand rests on a wagon wheel (which per the artist is a symbol for civilization on the march). Sculpted foliage partially overlaps the bottom of the wheel.
