The rectangular tomb is carved in relief around the upper edges with garland swags tied with ribbons. Each end of the tomb is carved in relief with a wreath.

This memorial to the only son of President Lincoln to live to maturity, was commissioned by Mrs. Robert Todd Lincoln for a total cost of $25,000. Robert Todd Lincoln served as Secretary of War to James Garfield. He died in 1926 at his home, the Dunlop-Lincoln House at 3014 N Street in Georgetown. He was interred in 1926, and the memorial was competed on March 19, 1930.
